Traditional night vision devices, also known as "image intensification" devices, work by amplifying available light to provide a clearer image in the dark. They use image intensifier tubes, which capture incoming light and convert it into electrons. These electrons are then accelerated and multiplied, resulting in a brighter image that can be seen through the device's eyepiece.

 

Digital night vision devices, on the other hand, use a digital sensor (such as a CMOS or CCD chip) to capture incoming light. In summary, in Traditional night vision, the image intensifier tube is used to amplify the ambient light. The device converts photons into electrons, multiplies them through a microchannel plate, and displays them through a fluorescent screen. Digitization works a little differently. Instead of amplifying natural light, digital night vision devices convert optical images into electrical signals through charge-coupled device (CCD/CMOS) image sensors. CCD/CMOS sensors have millions of tiny pixels that collect incident light. The sensor then records the value of each pixel and converts it into a picture on the LCD screen. The screen in most digital devices is located inside the eyepiece and displays in the same way as a Traditional night vision device.

So, what are the differences between these two types of devices?

 

First key difference is that traditional night vision devices tend to be more expensive and require more maintenance. Image intensifier tubes are delicate and need to be handled carefully to prevent damage. They also have a limited lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced.Digital night vision devices, on the other hand, are generally more affordable and easier to use. They can be operated with one hand and don't require any special training or maintenance. They also tend to be more durable and resistant to damage.

 

Second key difference between these two types of devices is their image quality. While traditional night vision devices can produce very clear images, they can also be prone to "blooming" or overexposure in bright environments. Digital night vision devices, on the other hand, can produce high-quality images in a wider range of lighting conditions.

 

Third key difference is image lag.The working process of the traditional night vision device will not hinder the speed of light to the eyes, and there will be no image delay. This is not the case for digital night vision goggles. A digital unit is creating an electric signal that needs to be refreshed to account for changes in the picture. The result is that a slight lag is produced while the device tries to keep up with changes in the observational target. This does not represent a drastic disadvantage for most applications, but it certainly can impact while tracking and moving.

 

In addition to the above three key points, digital night vision relies heavily on active infrared light to see a clearer picture. However, this is very dangerous in the military, so most troops use traditional night vision devices. Digital night vision devices can also provide more functionality, such as photography and positioning.

So which type of device is best for you? Ultimately, it depends on your needs and preferences. If you need the most high-quality, reliable image possible and don't mind spending a bit more money, a traditional night vision device might be the way to go. If you're looking for something more affordable and easy to use, a digital night vision device could be a better fit.Simply put, if the budget is sufficient, especially for military use, you must choose a traditional night vision device with an image intensifier tube. If it is not for military use, has a small budget, and needs shooting and other functions, then you can choose a digital night vision device.

 

Regardless of which type of device you choose, both traditional night vision devices and digital night vision devices have made huge advances in recent years. With increased durability, longer battery life, and better image quality, they have become an essential tool for a wide range of applications, from hunting and camping to law enforcement and military operations.
